How Does Electric Underfloor Heating Work?

So, how exactly does Under Floor Heating work? I’m glad you asked because there are a lot of misconceptions out there. Hopefully, by the end of this blog, you’ll know all the answers.

How does underfloor heating work?

Essentially Under Floor Heating elements are specifically designed electric cables that run across your floor. When electricity flows through the cables they heat up. As the whole floor is warmed at a nice even temperature the whole room is beautifully warm. Picture a massive electric blanket under your floor!

Why Electric Over Hydronic Systems?

Yes, there is another way to install floor heating. This involves running hot water through pipes under your floor. This is effective but does have some large upfront costs that may be cost-prohibitive. Electric systems can also be much easier to install and can be installed in a space as little as 1 m2 right through to large living areas.

So back to Electric systems.

There are a few ways that electric floor heating can be installed. The most common is generally referred to as “Undertile Heating”. (Although it can be installed under other floor surfaces too.)

It involves running a 4 mm thick cable across your floor to approximately every 70mm. You can see a simple video on how to install Undertile Heating here.  The flooring is then installed over the top and the room heats up. It is really that simple.

Once the element is installed, it is connected to a Thermostat that drives the floor heating for you. There are a variety of options out there in the market, including WiFi versions, and even Thermostats that connect to Google Home.

You can see the Hotwire range here.

Floor Heating can an hour or so to heat up, so your fully programmable thermostat simply switches the Underfloor Heating on for you an hour or so before you need it. Then when you get up in the morning or home from work your home is toasty warm.

The general response that we received after explaining Under Floor Heating is that it is much cheaper and much easier than people expected.

What about running costs?

I’m glad you asked this question too. We’ve answered those questions in this blog.

What about the upfront costs?

Another great question, that one is answered here.

So is Under Floor Heating worth it?

Of course, we think it is, and we’ve outlined why here.

But don’t just take our word for it, see what everyone’s favorite home renovators The Block’s Kyal and Kara have to say, IG: Kyal and Kara
