“Do heated floors heat the whole house?” It’s a good question and one we are asked quite a bit. If you’re building or renovating you want to make sure you get the most value for money and create the home you dream of living in.
The Truth About Underfloor Heating
If you’re just looking for a quick answer then, yes, floor heating can heat the entire room. If you are looking for a bit more detail read on.
Floor heating can heat your entire home. As you may suspect, I’ve had floor heating in a couple of homes now and in two of them, floor heating was the only heating we had in our living areas.
Traditional radiators, for example, heat the air around them, which rises and heats the room. However, this can lead to quite uneven heating. The air at the ceiling will be warm and the air at the floor quite cold. Underfloor heating on the other hand radiates heat from the floor upwards. This creates a much more even and comfortable heat.
It’s a bit like the warmth from the sun on a nice spring day, gentle, consistent,t and lovely.
How Does It Work?
Underfloor heating, or simply floor heating, works by installing a heating element under the floor. These elements gently warm the floor which radiates heat into the room. This warmth
Is Under Floor Heating Effective?
Absolutely! The effectiveness of underfloor heating depends on a few factors:
- Insulation: Obviously a well-insulated home will retain heat much more effectively, making your floor heating even more efficient.
Here is a great article on HOW TO INSULATE YOUR HOME WELL
- Flooring type: Some flooring will work better with floor heating than other types of flooring. Tiles and stones are excellent and give the best results.
- Zones: Even open-plan living areas can be “zoned” with floor heating. If you are not sure, send us your plans and we will help work out the best way to zone your home.

Underfloor Heating Running Costs: What to Expect
Many people also wrongly assume that floor heating is expensive to run. Like any heating system, running costs depend on energy prices, insulation, and how you use your heating. However, as floor heating is often set at a lower temperature than other heating it can be more efficient than other forms of heating.
